How do I apply for a work placement within Liverpool City Council?
All placements are booked through Liverpool Compact and this can be done by contacting the Work Experience Co-ordinatorat your school.
Do I get paid while on work experience?
No. You do not get paid as your participation in work experience is aimed at giving you the opportunity to see the world of work at first hand and to allow you to sample as wide a range of tasks as possible under the supervision of experienced staff.
Will I be expected to work the same hours as other staff?
Yes. All students will be expected to work the normal working hours of the organisation.
Will my lunch be provided?
No. You will be expected to provide your own lunch. The facilities available depend on where you work. Some placements have a canteen or a microwave and drinks machine. Some have shops nearby and others will require you to bring a packed lunch, or you can go to the local shops.
What sort of clothes will I be expected to wear?
This depends upon which placement you are in. Your School Work Experience Co-ordinator will be able to advise you. Any special items of clothing that are required; for example overalls or hard hats will be provided for you.
Am I insured while on placement with Liverpool City Council?
Yes. All students are insured while on placement with the City Council. However you still have a responsibility to behave in a sensible and safety conscious manner.
What do I get out of work experience?
You will learn lots of new skills and will be able to experience the world of work. For example, working within a team, taking responsibility for work and managing your own time. You will be able to gain the type of experience that all employers look for. If you are working towards Key Skill qualifications then you will be able to gather evidence and collect witness statements from staff to include in your Key Skills portfolio.
