Placement Title: Theatre Assistant

  • Description:
    Neptune Theatre
  • What experience would I get?
    Students will be working within a small team environment. There would be contact with the general public in the box office and marketing / publicity work involves liasing with outside agencies.
  • What would I be doing?
    Your main work would involve helping with publicity / marketing. We have to distribute publicity / posters / fliers, liasing with a local organisation called 'TEAM'. Students will also assist with the many mailshots done at the Theatre. Students will be shown how to use to computerised box office system.
  • Who works there and what do they do?
    • Marketing Manager / Publicity Assistant - Marketing of all professional acts. Organising brochure / ads. Distribution of publicity materials.
    • Box Office Manager / Assistant - Selling tickets to general public for shows. Banking any monies taken. Ordering stationery and other admin work.

Placement Title: Arts Development Assistant

  • Description:
    Liverpool is recognised internationally for its Art and Cultural heritage.
    The Arts Unit manages the City Council's investment in Arts organisations across Liverpool, seeking to develop a wide range of provision that reflects the multi cultural heritage of the City.
    The Unit provides information and advice services, publishes an annual directory of arts organisations and artists in the City and runs the Festival of Music Speech & Drama.
  • Who works there adn what do theyu do?
    • Arts Development Manager -
      General management functions, managing budgets and working with various art organisations ensuring that the Arts Unit is on target and services agreed are delivered.
    • Arts Development Officer -
      Support the development of projects, providing advice and information on programmes and events.
    • Arts Development Assistant -
      Support the work of the Unit, producing the annual directory of arts organisations and artists.
  • Experience
    Awareness and understanding of the range of arts activities within the City and how the City is moving towards recognition as European Capital of Culture. Working as part of a team involving deadlines, developing customer care, administration and word processing skills.
  • What would I be doing?
    There may be opportunity to take part in a whole range of activities from the planning stage to delivering and monitoring events depending upon the time of year of the placement and shadowing the Arts & Development Assistant to meetings. General administration, photocopying filing, word processing and reception duties

Placement Title: Outdoor Events Assistant - MIST, Croxteth Park

  • Description:
    Croxteth Hall & Country Park serves the Liverpool and wider communities with a range of visitor attractions and facilities backed up by a varied public events programme and an award winning Educational Service for schools within a 30 mile radius of the Country Park.

  • Who works there and what do they do??
    • Marketing & Information Service -
      Has overall responsibility for managing MIST team, managing marketing strategy and analysis of trends of visitor/client base.
    • Education Officer -
      Has responsibility to co-ordinate education programme. Has responsibility to co-ordinate events programme.
    • Curator -
      Has responsibility for Hall Heritage collection of items, museums collections and co-ordinates film and artistic ventures on site. 
  • What would I be doing?
    Communicating with people from all backgrounds. The ability to work to deadlines and to work as part of a team. To carry out various tasks - some mundane office tasks such as photocopying - through to working with school and public visitor groups. People interested in Drama, or with a drama based interest, especially welcome for participation in our theme weeks "Victorian Christmas" for example.

    This placement may involve some physical work, setting up rooms and equipment for schools and public visits. You will spend some time answering the telephone, working with IT to produce information from databases for analysis and may be asked to wear Viking or Victorian costume for one of our theme weeks! Using and developing IT skills, social skills, customer care. You will experience some of the tasks required to deliver to a demanding clientel.

Placement Title: Trainee Journalist

  • Description:
    Involvement in various aspects of the production of 'Pressgang' magazine. Pressgang is the official magazine of Liverpool Education Authority's 'Excellence in Liverpool Project'.

  • Who works there and what do they do?
    • Project Manager -
      Overall responsibility for the day to day organisation of the project including health & safety, placements, plannign reports, stationary, adminstration, budge and planning.
    • Editor -
      All journalist aspects of the placement.
  • What experience will I get?
    Pupils would gain experience of interviewing, basic news gathering, note taking, story writing, editing and sub editing, working to deadlines, proofing and using a digital camera. Working in a small office the pupils would develop various skills including diary planning, arranging and undertaking interviews, organising photographic resources, inputting stories on word processing packages, team working, reception and administration tasks. They would develop an understanding of the general, legal and ethical standards required in the professional media and work alongside the project manager and editor.

  • What will I be doing?
    Arranging and undertaking interviews (face to face and by telephone) and these can be with people in the news, sports stars, musicians, etc., then typing up interview/articles/reports. Time management, processing of digital photographs, researching information, use of the Internet and other IT packages, faxing information as appropriate. Pupils should have an interest in journalism, be honest, trustworthy, keen and prepared to work as part of a team. During the placement the trainees travel around and produce film/theatre reviews, reports on tourist attractions and undertake visits to places in the news.
