Placement Title: Internal Auditor 

  • Description:
    Part of the Resources Portfolio. Internal Audit visits all services within the City Council and completes routine reviews of the systems they operate and various ad-hoc projects and investigations as required. This includes activities funded through the Council such as adult learning centres, leisure centres, libraries, partnerships and schools, as well as the central departments.
  • Who works there and what do they do?
    • About 20 Audit managers and staff - Split into four broad groups they pursue a programme of planned audit work in the various Council portfolios, and undertake ad-hoc assignments.
    • The Special Assignments Unit -A specially trained and equipped team that undertakes investigations at management's request or in response to whistleblowing by employees or the public.  
  • What experience would I get?
    An introduction to Internal Audit, a financial environment, and office work. 
    An awareness of internal control and the importance of internal checks. 
    Introduction to a systematic approach to reviewing activities. 
    A chance to observe or be part of Internal Audit work in different services.

Placement Title: Health & Safety Assistant 

  • Description: The Health & Safety Unit provides health & safety advice and guidance to ensure compliance with legislation throughout Liverpool City Council. Assisting in the provision of a safe environment for all its employees and visitors.
  • What would I be doing?
    You would assist the officers in carrying out their duties: incl. Admin.(clerical/computer), attending training courses/seminars; visiting sites for inspections or investigations in event of accident or hazard and attending meetings (both internal & external). 
  • Who works there and what do they do?
    Corporate Health/Safety Manager - Has overall responsibility for the Unit - plays a key role in producing health & safety policies for the organisation.
    • Lead Officers - Each has a specific responsibility for a Portfolio - advising Directors / Managers on all health & safety issues & best way forward for that area.
    • Support Officers -Supports the lead officer as well as undertaking specific tasks delegated to them. 
  • What experience would I get?
    A wide range of knowledge and skills in office environment. Developing skills in IT, communicating with staff and visitors, as well as assisting you in the future choice of career.Working as a member of a team will assist you in building up confidence and self-esteem as well as the discipline of the working environment.

  • Description: Busy admin office supporting all areas of Environmental Health. 
  • Who works there and what do they do?
    • Service Area Co-ordinator - Supervises all the administration
    • Team Leader -Responsible for small admin. team
    • Word Processor Operatives -Provide word processing support for administrators 
  • What experience would I get?
    Communication with general public. IT Skills. Experiencing a busy office environment. Team Working. 
  • What would I be doing?
    Opening post/photocopying/franking outgoing mail. Using computer - inputting data. Work shadowing Technical Officers. Sending e-mails/faxes.

Placement Title: Job Shadowing - Head Of Equal Opps & PAT 

  • Description: This section is responsible for ensuring that the City council's race equality; disability and equalities programmes in general are delivered effectively. 
  • Who works there and what do they do?
    • Head of Equal Opps & PAT -Support and advise Portfolios on their delivery of the council's Race Equality Action Plan / Scheme. To manage the Council's Positive Action Training Programme. To ensure the City Council complies with Disability Discrimination Act (1995). To develop initiatives to combat gender and sexual orientation inequality.

  • What experience will I get?
    Students will gain experience of what the legislation says in relation to the Equalities Agenda, e.g. Race, disability, gender etc. You will also find out how Liverpool City Council has responded to this law and how these initiatives will be implemented. 
  • What will I be doing?
    During the day you will be attending meetings with the Head of Equal Opportunities with Service Managers, Executive Directors etc in order to provide advice on the above and to monitor their progress. You will also visit community groups where the Head of Equal Opportunities has a role to support their development.
