Placement Title: Recreation Attendant / Lifestyles Assistant - Dry
- Description: The City Council has 15 sports centres providing leisure facilities for communities throughout Liverpool, ranging from single swimming pools to an athletics and tennis complex. There are 9 lifestyle fitness studios providing the latest fitness equipment, with the opportunity of an induction and instruction in the use of the equipment. The sports centres combined attract 2 million visitors a year.
- Who works there and what do they do?
- Sports Centre Manager -Overall responsibility for the Sports Centre
- Supervisor-Supervises all staff and general running of the centre
- Receptionist-Responsible for general customer enquiries and cash handling
- Recreation Attendant- All aspects of pool and lifeguard/dryside duties (eg gym)
- Lifestyles Instructor -Responsible for lifestyles gym.
- What experience will I get?
You will be given the opportunity to work alongside staff, gaining a knowledge of how Sports Centres operate. Although for health and safety reasons you will not be allowed on the pool side. You will gain an insight into all aspects of a recreation/lifestyles attendant duties, including an awareness of the Health & Safety procedures in operation. You will also learn about and help to promote specific schemes eg Leisure and Culture pass scheme. You will gain experience of all aspects of customer care. - What will I be doing?
The placement will be in the dryside facilities eg gym, you will be shadowing staff taking care of customer needs/enquiries, general cleaning and maintenance. ensuring programmes (i.e. badminton, basketball etc.) go ahead Duties do involve physical work eg putting up equipment. There may also be an opportunity to gain experience in administration duties, and to shadow the Sports Centre Manager, Supervisor, and Receptionist.

Placement Title: Library Assistants (various)
- Description:
The City Council has over 20 libraries serving communities throughout Liverpool. As well as loaning books, the libraries also loan music CD's, playstation games and provide access to the Internet. Libraries also provide a range of community information and services to their customers. You will deal with a range of customers face to face and help with enquiries. You will help to manage the loan and return of library materials making sure things are tidy and in order. Liverpool Libraries use the latest technology to keep records and provide information to customers at the touch of a button.
- Who works there and what do they do?
- Community Librarian - Has overall responsibility for delivering library services to the local community.
- Library Supervisor - Supervises the team of library assistants and is responsible for the day to day running of the library. Deals with customer's enquiries including using the public Internet facilities, issue library materials and uses technology to keep records up to date and access information for customers.
- What experience would I get?
Communicating with customers of all ages and backgrounds. Using IT to issue and return library materials. Working as part of a team. Finding out how books and other materials are kept in order for easy access. - What would I be doing?
This placement involves some physical work, returning books and materials to their correct place. You will spend time at the frontdesk helping to deal with customer's enquiries, loans and returns. You will also be expected to carry out some routine tasks like photocopying, answering the telephone and opening mail.
