Archives Catalogue

ANNUAL CLOSURE

In order to progress essential work on archives and local studies materials we regret that there will be no public acces to the service other than by postal, telephone and e-mail enquiry from Monday 16 June to Sunday 29 June 2008.

We apologise for any inconvenience which this might cause.

This catalogue contains archive lists from both Liverpool and Merseyside Record Offices. Work on this database is ongoing and new entries will appear on a regular basis. If you cannot find the records you are looking for please email us at recoffice.central.library@liverpool.gov.uk.

Search Catalogue

The catalogue includes archive lists for:

  • Project POOL (Photographs of Old Liverpool): 20,000 photographs from the City Engineers Department, 1897-1960 with 2,000 attached images. Catalogued with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
  • Liverpool City Council: The Corporation archives including minute books from 1550, education records including school records and cemeteries interment registers.
  • Merseyside Jewish Community Archives: Includes records of synagogues, organisations, schools, businesses and personal papers. Catalogued with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Jewish Community.
  • Ecclesiastical Records: Includes full details of Roman Catholic and Non-conformist archives together with summary details of Church of England parish holdings.
  • Imperial Tobacco Company, Ogden Branch: Full listing of this important business archive. Catalogued with the support of Imperial Tobacco plc.
  • Merseyside Record Office: Brief details of all catalogued collections plus full listings of Non-conformist church and Coroner's records.

Sunday 12pm to 4pm

Appointments are not necessary for viewing sources on microfilm/fiche but they are recommended if you require reader printers. A reader's ticket is needed to request archives, books, maps, photographs and watercolours. Please bring proof of name and address. You will be asked to leave any bags in lockers before consulting original material. There is an annual closure for stock-taking and special projects during the third and fourth weeks in June.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own camera to obtain copies of documents for personal use only. Anyone intending to publish images from our collections must obtain permission from the Manager.

Liverpool 800: Culture, Character and History

Liverpool 800: Culture, Character and History sets out the history of Liverpool in a book specially commissioned by the City Council and the University of Liverpool to mark the 800th anniversary of the City's first royal charter. The book has 300 illustrations and has been fully researched and written by the foremost experts on the City's history. Originally published in September 2006, the paperback edition costs only £14.95, the hardback edition costs £35.
