Liverpool City Council is delighted to support the Bookstart National scheme, which aims to help families to discover the fun and excitement of sharing books together.

In Liverpool, Bookstart is co-ordinated by the Library Service in partnership with Booktrust, Health Visitors, Early Years Practitioners and Outreach Partners in the City.

There are three fantastic age appropriate Bookstart packs available for your child.

Each Free Bookstart pack contains books and guidance materials for families to share and enjoy. Don't let your child miss out!

Children are never too young to join the library and membership is free!

Under fives

All Libraries have a collection of picture books and board books suitable for under-5s. These can be used with very young children to help them enjoy the wonderful world of books. Story sessions and rhyme times for babies and toddlers are available at a number of community libraries. Remember even babies can have their very own library card. You're never to young to join in!

Count Me In 1,2,3

It is never to early to start sharing books which is why Liverpool Libraries and Yorkshire bank are working together to launch a great new project Count me in.

The aim of Count me in is to develop mathematical ideas and concepts for young children through story and rhyme. Counting games complement the picture books enabling parents and carers to enjoy sharing books and activities with young children from 18 months - 4 years.

Even though children may not understand the words at first they love hearing voices and looking at pictures. Recent studies have shown that children who have been given books from an early age learn to read more quickly at school. They are able to count at a young age because so many picture books and rhymes involve numbers.

The Count me in bags are available for loan to parents, carers, staff from early years settings and childminders.

Remember all activities and toys in the bags should be shared and enjoyed under adult supervision.

Baby fun - One Little Duck

Young children from about 18 months old will enjoy this simple counting rhyme. Repetition helps to develop language skills. The activities will encourage listening, looking and learning about colours and sizes.

Wobble bear says yellow

2 -3 year olds follow wobble bear as he gets ready for bed. The activities will encourage colour recognition, counting, observation and matching, size and co-ordination.

Oliver's Vegetables

Young children may relate to Oliver who won't eat anything but chips - that is until he helps his grandpa in the garden. The activities in the pack help with counting, sequencing, number recognition, matching and height comparison.
