Reference and information services
Liverpool Libraries provide a wide range of information and reference services from our 23 community libraries and Central Library, which is one of Britain's foremost public reference libraries. Our extensive research collections have been built up over the last 150 years and we also have access to the latest electronic resources.
Online Resources
Liverpool Libraries have subscribed to a number of online resources. Some resources can be accessed from the links below by typing in your library ticket number. Please type in all the letters and numbers on your ticket, start with LVP (in capital letters) and then the numbers without any spaces.
Who's Who and Who was Who - Find out if your favourite figure in history, media or sport is listed. Keyword search option is available to search for people from a region or town.
Oxford Dictionary of National Biography - explore the lives of over 55,000 people who have shaped the British past over the last 2,400 years.
Oxford Reference Online - over 1 million entries across 25 subjects, including an expanding range of Oxford Companions and the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.
Oxford Art Online - (including Grove Art) the visual arts worldwide - from prehistory to the present day.
Oxford Music Online - (including Grove Music) music worldwide - from classical to hip hop and from baroque to blues
Naxos Music Library - listen and learn about a whole range of music, from Louis Armstrong, Mozart, traditional Chinese music and many more as well as a section especially for children
Oxford English Dictionary - evolution of more than 600,000 words over the last 1,500 years through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of sources
Encyclopaedia Britannica Online - the world's best known encyclopaedia. Ages 18+
Britannica Junior - for ages 5-11
Britannica Student for ages 12-18
Newsbank - full newspaper articles from a huge range of local and national newspapers.
Times Digital Archive - searchable archive of The Times newspaper dating from 1785 onwards

Information resources held in Central Library include:, UK and European Union legislation and official publications, company reports, statistics, patents and an extensive collection of directories covering manufacturing, professional bodies and business, academic, social and leisure services.
We can help you find information of a wide range of subjects, for example:
