Central Library and Archive Redevelopment
Central Library and Archive Redevelopment - your views count
Liverpool Central Library is one of the largest public libraries in Britain, holding extensive collections and offering a wide range of lending and information services to all ages. Also within the Central Library is the Liverpool Record Office, where the City's historic archives are kept.
An ambitious redevelopment plan is now underway to create a public library and archive service for the 21st century and to support Liverpool as European Capital of Culture 2008. The redevelopment will update and improve customer services, and provide a long term secure home for the heritage collections.
The following are some of the areas in the Central Library that we are looking to improve and we welcome your comments on these or any other aspect of the re-development:
- Children's services
- Books and reading
- Electronic library services (the e-library)
- Public computing services
- Learning opportunities for all ages
- Family and local history services
- Archives (and electronic access)
- Information services
- Information for business
- Music services (and sound and video recordings services)
- Rare books and historic collections
- Customer services for all
We have a provisional allocation of £49.3m Private Finance Initiative credits from Central Government. This is for a private contractor to rebuild the library, and operate the building, for 25 years in partnership with the City Council. The City Council will also contribute to the costs. A remodelled entrance to create a more visible presence in William Brown Street while retaining the fabulous heritage infrastructure. Meeting space, display and exhibition areas, café and other public facilities will be improved.
We hope that you will be able to contribute towards this exciting development and look forward to hearing your views.
