Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable and Flower market
There has been a fruit and vegetable market in Liverpool since 1859, when the Cazneau Street wholesale fruit market, and the adjoining vegetable market were well known Liverpool landmarks.The building housing these markets was destroyed during the war, but the traders carried on regardless, selling from tin huts until they received finance to help them move to a more appropriate site.
It became clear that a larger site outside the City Centre was required to take into account the impact of increased car traffic. A large 20 acre stadium site was bought by the City Council and planning permission was granted in 1964 for the construction of a 'Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable and Flower market'. The grand opening ceremony was performed by HRH The Duchess of Kent on 5th May 1969.
Business is still booming today!
