Parks & Greenspaces- who are we?

Parks & Greenspaces looks after the management of:
10 City Parks (including Croxteth Country Park)
14 District Parks
46 Neighbourhood Parks
45 Playgrounds
3 Local Nature Reserves
We also have a City wide role for the natural environment, provide education and events and contribute towards enhancing communities and Neighbourhoods.

There are basically four sections in Parks and Greenspaces, together with a central administrative and coordinating Business Support team.

Greenspace Client

Our Greenspace Client team looks after our Parks and green areas.  The Parks Officers have responsibilities for individual parks and playgrounds.  A large part of their role is to monitor the condition and maintenance of Parks, ensuring that they are kept at a high quality.  They also work closely with local communities and Friends groups to meet their needs, liaising over local events and implementing improvements in Parks.  Part of the team have a special expertise in looking after the trees in our City, a particularly valued asset.  The wildlife of Liverpool is looked after by our Nature Conservation officer.

The Greenspace Client team oversees the activities of the City's joint venture partners (Glendale Liverpool and Enterprise Liverpool) who are contracted to deliver the maintenance work.  The Greenspace Client Team and Development Team (see below) are mostly based at the old Coach House in Calderstones Park.

Greenspace Development

The Greenspace Development section look after Park improvements, develop new projects, provide information about the Parks and run the education and events programmes of the Ranger Service. City Floral Services provide a welcome service by 'greening up' reception areas in council offices.  The specialised skills of the Horticulture team look after our Botanical Collection.  The current programme of work includes improvements to Parks all around the City as well as major projects in Sefton Park and Stanley Park.  More details of what we do and where we do it are laid out in our current Parks and Greenspaces Improvement Plan (PDF [8.7Mb] opens in new window). Any new developments in the City are balanced by improvements to the nearby environment, another task looked after by the Greenspace Development team.

Croxteth Hall & Country Park

Croxteth Hall & Country Park, the largest park in the City, forms a section of its own, with staff that look after the  Hall, Farm and Walled Garden.  The section at Croxteth has particular skills, with Hall staff looking after conferences , weddings and functions in addition to the stately home rooms open to the public.  The livestock  are looked after by the Farm team, who run a programme to conserve these rare animals and show farming to the public.  They also grow 'haylage' in the Park, which is cut and preserved for feeding to the animals in the winter.  The Walled Garden staff are specialists in the historic fruit, vegetable and flower garden, re-creating the atmosphere of the garden a century ago.  Croxteth Hall is also the home of the Ranger Interpretation Service, part of the Greenspace Development Team.

Cemeteries and Crematoria

Cemeteries and Crematoria are the fourth section within the division, maintaining graveyards and crematoria, while providing a caring service for the bereaved.

The work of Parks & Greenspaces is guided by the Parks Strategy (PDF [3.8Mb] opens in new window), a document which represents the City Council's long-term aspiration for Liverpool's rich and varied legacy of parks. It sets a direction for long-term planning, improved corporate and community co-ordination and seeks to apply a Best Value approach to future park management and improvement.
