Council successes

  • Liverpool beat off stiff competition to win the European Capital of Culture title.
  • Liverpool has been awarded Beacon Status for libraries, Social Inclusion through ICT and Community Legal Services.
  • Key services such as those for children and young people (including education), adult social care and environment have been officially judged to be 'performing well' by the Audit Commission, while the benefits service gets top marks and is rated as 'performing strongly'.
  • Liverpool's Council Tax is no longer the highest in the country, following a series of freezes and a cut, together with inflation level rises. Liverpool has now dropped out of the top 100 most taxed councils in the country.
  • Liverpool has introduced the largest school building programme in Europe, transforming the quality of education for tens of thousands of children through a £500 million scheme to refurbish or replace every secondary school.
  • Liverpool has established Joint Venture companies to invest in, manage and improve council services. This has included pioneering the largest council call centre in the country which handles more than two million calls per year, and a network of One Stop Shops across the city.
