Carers get creative for 08

Liverpool is searching for carers young and old to make their mark as budding bards and potential Piccasso's in European Capital of Culture year.

In partnership with Liverpool Carers Centre, the city council is looking for people with a skill for sketching and a rhythm for rhyme to enter a special art, craft and poetry competition.

The 08 work needs to be based around the theme "Culture of Caring" and is open to unpaid carers in four age categories: 11 and under, 12-17 years, 18-49 years and 50 and over.

The aim of the competition is to celebrate the diverse caring community in Liverpool.

There are 47,000 adult carers and 2,000 young carers in Liverpool, who each spend time looking after a close relative or friend.

Jane Weller, Senior Improvement Officer from Community Services, is helping organise the competition. She said: "This is a chance to celebrate the talents of a large number of people who make a really valuable contribution to life in Liverpool.

"I am certain there are many who have hidden artistic skills and I would urge anyone who is eligible and thinks they have a talent for art or poetry to enter the competition."

Hazel Brown, manager of Liverpool Carers Centre, said: "We are delighted to be involved in this competition and have run workshops which have proved extremely popular. We are looking forward to receiving entries and I know choosing a winner will be very difficult."

Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the top three winners in each age category during the annual Carers Week event at St George's Hall on June 12th, where the top entries will be also be displayed.

The overall winning entry will be used as the design for the council's corporate Christmas card in 2008.

All entries should be submitted to the Liverpool Carers Centre, Mount Vernon Green, Hall Lane, Liverpool, L7 8TF between 28th April and May 9th.
