Batty about books!

Snakes, exotic animals and fearsome pirates are taking over Liverpool Central Library!

The library is hosting its free, annual children's celebration event on Saturday 3 May.

To mark the National Year of Reading 2008, this year's event is themed 'Batty About Books'. It aims to encourage children to use their local library, get reading and unearth a fascinating world of discovery.

The library will come alive with a range of exciting events. Dave Duckett and his exotic animals will amaze visitors - and children will even have the chance to make their own twirly, wirly snake to take home.

The library's Bookstart Team will lead readings of popular children's book 'Shark in the Park'. Young 'land lubbers' will be able to drop anchor at 'Treasure Island' and take part in special pirate art and crafts.

And there will even be the chance to decorate an enchanted forest with fairytale characters and mythical beasts.

There will also be face painting, modelling and magic tricks.

Senior Librarian, Patricia Lee, said: "This special event is about capturing the imaginations of families and showing them how fun, exciting and educational their local library can be. Hopefully we can get them hooked and coming back to their library again and again.

"It will be a fantastic day with lots of fun activities for the children to take part in. Everything is free and everyone is welcome!"

The 'Batty About Books' children's celebration day takes place at Liverpool Central Library on Saturday 3 May 2008, from 12.30pm-3.30pm.
