Best pubs, bar none!
Liverpool is toasting a new publication which profiles its vibrant public houses.
'Around the City in 80 Pubs' is a companion guide to a festival of the same name, which will celebrate the contribution pubs make to Liverpool's cultural scene. It contains details of poetry, performance, comedy, history - and even magic - taking place in Liverpool pubs during 2008.
Festival highlights include a series of free two-hour early evening walks, covering everything from Liverpool music to maritime history, which take place between May and October. Led by MerseyGuides, each tour starts and finishes at a local pub, and there'll be a chance for walkers to enjoy a drink en route!
The brochure also contains individual listings for dozens of pubs across Liverpool - from the Rose and Crown in the city centre to the Rose of Mossley in Mossley Hill - and details of what makes each one unique. More than 15,000 copies of the brochure will be distributed to venues across the city from this week, kick-starting a summer of activity which will culminate in September 2008 with a two-week festival, coinciding with the CAMRA Real Ale Festival and Heritage Open Days.
Eileen Wilshaw, Heritage and Historic Environment Manager at the Liverpool Culture Company, said: "Around the City in 80 Pubs has been so popular that the brochure actually features details for 83 pubs! It means we can highlight a really wide range of activity, and reflect just how much is on offer in the city's public houses.
"It's shaping up to be a great programme but with more than four months to go we're still developing some aspects of the festival, so the brochure is really just the beginning."
Pubs who would like to get involved in the project can do so by calling Ian Jukes at the Liverpool Culture Company on (0151) 233 8133.
Around the City in 80 Pubs is organised by the Liverpool Culture Company and supported by Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, Campaign for Real Ale, Pub Watch schemes and breweries, pub managers and individual landlords around the city.
