Kids have say on play
A NEW playground is certain to be a big hit with youngsters - they chose the equipment!
Children from Matthew Arnold Primary School and the Dingle Play Centre were given the responsibility of picking a new play area to replace the outdated one on Dingle Lane, Aigburth, which hadn't been updated since 1996.
Out of the ten designs they were shown, the majority of children opted for a playground featuring top of the range slides, climbing walls, spinners and roundabouts. It opens tomorrow (Thursday 15 May) at 2.30pm.
Liverpool city council's executive member for the environment, Councillor Berni Turner, said: "It was important to involve local children in the planning stages for the new playground because they will be the ones using the area.
"The brand new equipment will also give greater access for children with disabilities, with specially designed swings and slides.
"We want to do as much as we can to encourage youngsters to turn off their television and get out into their local playground because we know that not only will it benefit them physically but it gives them the opportunity to interact with other children and develop their social skills.
"The city council's commitment to investing in our green spaces and making them as child friendly as possible should to help to achieve this aim."
The brand new park has been designed and installed by SMP Playgrounds. It cost £75,000, with funding for the project coming from the Big Lottery Fund.
A similar scheme is underway in Fazakerley where children in Longmoor Primary School have also chosen a design for their local park. The park is set to be completed in the next couple of weeks.
