Liverpool's first RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden for nearly forty years is set to receive a 'Royle' seal of approval.

Actress Sue Johnston will open Liverpool's exhibit, entitled Mr Roscoe's Garden, on Monday, May 19.

The Royle Family and Waking the Dead star grew up in Prescot, Merseyside, and found fame playing Sheila Grant in Liverpool-based soap Brookside. She is currently appearing in 'Small Change' at the Donmar Warehouse theatre in London's Covent Garden.

Sue Johnston said: "I'm delighted to be helping launch Liverpool's exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show. I had a fantastic time at the official opening for European Capital of Culture back in January so I was only too happy to show my support again.

"It's a great honour for Liverpool to take part in such a prestigious event, and it's especially fitting during such a special year for the city.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing Mr Roscoe's Garden in all its glory!"

Liverpool is appearing at Chelsea - billed as the world's greatest flower show - as part of Fragrant, a major commission for its European Capital of Culture celebrations. The city has previously exhibited six times - 1955, 1960, 1962, 1965, 1967 and 1970, winning gold medals on three occasions.

After Chelsea, Mr Roscoe's Garden will return to the north west, visiting the Bluecoat, Liverpool (June 19 - 22); The RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park, Cheshire (July 23 - 27); and Southport Flower Show (August 21 - 24). Fragrant will culminate in September with the publication of a special book and accompanying photographic exhibition by Jyll Bradley at Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery.
