Civic welcome for Romanian guests

Transylvanian students are to be given a civic reception as they visit Liverpool to learn lessons from the current Capital of Culture.

The party of four students from the city of Sibiu - last year's European Capital of Culture - are on a return visit to Archbishop Blanch School.

Pupils and staff from Archbishop Blanch School won the Merseyside Enterprise Olympics last year and the prize of visiting the then European Capital of Culture 2007 - Sibiu in Transylvania.  Now the school has organised a reciprocal visit.

The students have an action-packed itinerary including being shown around the city's cultural gems by Culture Company staff. They will also meet representatives from JM University and Merseyside Police and be interviewed live on a local radio show.

All four students will stay at the wonderful 3345 Parr Street boutique hotel courtesy of Gary Miller - Liverpool's executive member for enterprise and tourism. They will also meet a prolific local author, visit St George's Hall and have a civic reception from the Lord Mayor. They will also attend the Beatles Imagine Concert courtesy of CMP Promotions.

Liverpool's Lord Mayor Councillor Steve Rotheram said: "The students were very keen to come and see how Liverpool was hosting its current year as Capital of Culture and compare it to their own year. After hosting the Archbishop Blanch students they all have a strong affiliation with Liverpool - something we hope will continue. I am personally looking forward to meeting them and seeing them receive a typically warm welcome from the people of Liverpool."

Jane Griffiths head of Archbishop Blanch said: "It is a great privilege to welcome our friends from Sibiu and to repay some of the very generous hospitality our staff and students received when in Transylvania.  I am looking forward to joining them at some of the events that have been arranged.  It is wonderful that such strong links have been forged with students from Romania and it is the school's intention that we can build upon these links in the future.  I would particularly like to thank Mrs Pauline Addy from the Business Studies department for arranging and organising this event."

The students fly back to Bucharest on Friday.
