Tall Ships Guide
The first ever Tall Ships guide to contain images of every vessel at a host port is now on sale.
The Official Programme for the Tall Ships' Races 2008 at Liverpool (host port from Friday 18-Monday July 21) is a 130 page guide.
A full colour publication it not only has pictures and biographies of all 60 vessels, but also contains useful information such as the berthing plan at both Albert and Wellington Docks and the formation for the Parade of Sail on Monday, July 21.
A total of 50,000 copies are available from all good newsagents in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales, Tourist Information outlets, Mersey Ferries and vendors throughout the Tall Ships event.
Liverpool's Official Tall Ships Programme also lists useful travel information as well as listings for entertainment such as the 08 Shanty festival, what's on in Liverpool that weekend and a historical look at the city's maritime heritage.
Produced by Liverpool Culture Company and Trinity Mirror, the guide is on sale at £4 and also contains souvenir pages allowing owners to get their copy stamped by visiting vessels.
Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool city council and Deputy Chairman of Liverpool Culture Company said: ''This guide is the perfect tool to navigating the weekend. It's the most comprehensive programme ever produced by a host port and will greatly enhance the Tall Ships experience for visitors - be it finding a vessel to what else to do that weekend. And there's never been a better time to visit Liverpool.''
As European Capital of Culture, Liverpool is awash with 08 highlights such as; Klimt exhibition at Tate Liverpool, the Beat Goes on at World Museum Liverpool, Art in the Age of Steam in The Walker, the Liverpool Arabic Arts festival, The Summer Pops at the ECHO Arena, Go Superlmabananas Parade, John Lennon Songbook at Liverpool Phil, Once Upon A time at The Adelphi at The Playhouse as well as The Open Championships at nearby Royal Birkdale.
The fleet of 60 vessels are expected to start arriving on the River Mersey from Wednesday, July 16 with the majority of the larger Class 'A' Tall Ships will moor in the Wellington Docks - two miles north of the Albert Docks. Approximately 800,000 people are expected to see them.
The event officially opens at 12noon with activities until 10pm on Friday, and from 10am to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday. Liverpool's Tall Ships celebrations climax from 2pm-4.30pm on Monday, July 21 when the fleet gather for the spectacular Parade of Sail, led by the Royal Navy frigate HMS Argyll.
The first race to Maloy, Norway begins at 1pm on Wednesday, July 23. The Tall Ships' Races are organised by Sail Training International as a means to showcase the activity that is sail training. The Tall Ships' Races are supported by Antwerp.
