Green fourteen!

Liverpool is greener than anywhere else in Merseyside!

Fourteen of the city's green spaces will be flying the Green Flag after being awarded the national accolade by the Civic Trust.

And for the first time, Doric Park in Old Swan has been given the prestigious green award.

The Green Flag is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and is awarded on an annual basis.

Liverpool City Council's executive member for the environment, Councillor Berni Turner, said: "We entered 14 parks, and for all 14 to come out on top is fantastic news.

"We are committed to making sure our parks and green spaces are of the highest possible standard for the millions of people who visit them every year.

"I'm delighted that Doric Park has joined the worthy list of winners and I'd like to say a special thanks to all the local residents, especially Sandra Jones and Ian Hill whose energy, enthusiasm and fund raising efforts have raised the profile of this lovely park and played a major part in it winning this award.

"The accolade is a real credit to everyone involved from the parks and environment department, the gardeners from Glendale Liverpool, Friends of Groups right through to the community."

The fourteen winning parks are:

  • Calderstones Park

  • Devonfield Garden

  • Everton Park Nature Garden

  • Falkner Square

  • Greenbank Park

  • Our Lady and St Nicholas Church Garden

  • Springwood Crematorium Memorial Gardens

  • Reynolds Park

  • St John's Gardens

  • Woolton Woods and Camphill

  • Belle Vale Park

  • Anfield Crematorium Memorial Garden

  • Doric Park

To receive an award, parks and gardens must meet demanding criteria which includes conservation and heritage, community involvement, healthy, safety, security and it must be a welcoming place.

The official Green Flag announcement will be made on Thursday (17 July) in London by Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Baroness Andrews.

Paul Todd, Green Flag Award scheme Application Manager, said: "The increasing number of Green Flag Award winning parks and green spaces highlight the important role they play in bringing people together and improving their quality of life.

"Congratulations to all of the city council staff, and in particular, thousands of volunteers whose hard work and dedication has brought this award of excellence."

All winners from across the country will celebrate their achievements and collect their flags at a ceremony in Liverpool on Thursday 24 July.
