Speke market opens

The new-look Speke market will be officially opened tomorrow.

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Steve Rotheram, will cut a ribbon to declare the market open in a ceremony starting at 11.30am.

About 30 stalls sell a wide range of goods at the market, which takes place each Wednesday, on the public concourse next to Morrison's in Penketh Drive. It is operated by Geraud Markets.

The previous market in Speke was based in a car park at the former Speke District Centre which has been demolished and replaced by a new shopping development.

Cllr Phil Moffatt, Assistant Executive Member for the Environment, who will also be at the opening ceremony, said: "The new market has increased the range and choice of shopping available in Speke.

"It is breathing new life into a venue which had been in decline in recent years and we want it to be a real community market creating customer confidence in local produce.

"We aim to provide good quality markets across the whole of the city and Speke shows how we are determined to improve markets for local communities."
