Launch of Liverpool's prolific offender unit

John Crawley Prolific Offender Unit Manager said: "Drugs and crime go hand in hand; here at the Unit we will do all we can to help people give up drugs. However if they do not, we will endeavour to catch and convict them. At the unit we have a holistic approach to prolific offending. We are a combination of enforcement, treatment and community liaison and it is making an impact."
Based at Eaton Road Police Station, the Unit operates a multi-agency approach and works in three ways to tackle prolific offending and its causes:
- Using deterrents to prevent people from becoming prolific offenders
- Working with the community to identify and convict those who commit drug-related crime; and
- Providing services to rehabilitate those who want to make a new start.
The unit differs from schemes in other parts of the UK as it targets offenders at all stages within the Criminal Justice System. It uses a joint approach to tackling drug-related crime and has been created following the merger of the Fairway Project and the Liverpool Intensive Supervision and Monitoring (LISM) project.
The Unit has a community liaison officer who works with communities making them an integral part of the solutions to make safer and stronger communities.
Through initiatives such as Citysafe (Liverpool's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership) and Crimestoppers and the close monitoring of offenders through the Probation Service, the Unit works together to prevent and deter criminal behaviour and improve the quality of life for local residents.
Partners include Citysafe (Liverpool's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership), Merseyside Police, Crimestoppers, Merseycare and Merseyside Probation Service.
