Neighbourhood alert
Partners of Citysafe officially launched the 'Neighbourhood Alert' initiative at the Lee Valley 'Millennium Centre. Representatives from key partners, namely Neighbourhood Management Services, Trading Standards, Community Safety, Supported Living and Merseyside Police along with community leaders met to endorse the scheme which aims to raise awareness to people of the dangers of bogus 'official ' callers and rogue traders .
Historically there has been and continues to be an ongoing problem of bogus callers and rogue traders who prey on the elderly and the vulnerable. A bogus caller/rogue trader or distraction burglary is not classed as a 'volume crime' by the police, but the impact it can have on the victim can be devastating.
Weekly 'neighbourhood alert' updates are sent out via email by Merseyside Police to key individuals working within the Primary Care Trusts, Neighbourhood Management Services, Supported Living, Home Carers, Trading Standards and the Voluntary Sector. They in turn disseminate this information out to their staff who work within the community so that they can inform their clients right away if a bogus caller has been operating in their area and to be aware.
The neighbourhood alerts contain information about methods used by bogus callers, descriptions of offenders, postal areas affected and any vehicles used. In addition to this, in order not to create fear of crime amongst the community Citysafe intend to use the Neighbourhood Alert system to send out good news stories.
