Citizenship event at Cross Farm County Primary school, South Liverpool
Partners of Citysafe including Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue and team members from Safer Neighbourhood Services, Neighbourhood Management Services and the Community Safety Team organised a Gala Day at Cross Farm County Primary School in Belle Vale.
The purpose of the event was to introduce younger children to the concepts of citizenship and simple key messages relating to the effects of anti-social behaviour.
Six primary schools (around 200 year 1 pupils) in Belle Vale attended the event. For this years event partner representatives of Citysafe ran very basic workshops for the pupils, including:
Merseytravel - brought along a single decker bus, encouraging pupils to sit on the bus and gave simple messages about safety on public transport
Fire & Rescue Service - attended with a fire engine and explained to the pupils simple fire safety messages
Merseyside Police - Police Community Support Officers talked to the pupils and gave them simple information on their work within communities
Truancy Team - talked to the children on the importance of attending school and the problems of truancy
Housing Providers and Community Safety Team members gave simple key messages about anti-social behaviour, the importance of recycling and how to look after your environment e.g. how to keep their neighbourhood tidy, not to drop litter, and the importance of cleaning up after your dog
The teams used engaging interactive activities such as a puppet show and a recognisable character from a well known television children's show to demonstrate how behaviour can impact on them, their families and their neighbours.
This event is intended to be a gentle introduction for younger children into the concepts of citizenship and individual rights and responsibilities. The Gala Day is also part of a wider programme which Citysafe runs each year within Liverpool South. The programme has been developed to cover targeted activities for four primary year groups (years 1, 4, 5 and 6). The message for each year remains broadly the same but the activity is different to suit each year group's development stage.
The year 1 event is purely on a `getting to know you` basis. The events in year 4 & 5 are aimed at addressing the subject of anti-social behaviour and are deliberately held in late summer before the long summer school break begins.
