Liverpool City Council - vehicle crime

Vehicle crime

Between 2006/07 and 2007/08 the total amount of vehicle crime in Liverpool fell by 22%.  However when broken down into the different vehicle crime offences, the picture is slightly different:

  • Vehicle theft has fallen 30%
  • Theft from a vehicle has fallen 19%.

Technology has made it increasingly difficult to steal a car without keys, thus the large reductions in vehicle theft in recent years.

Reducing the number of thefts from a vehicle is arguably more a question of educating owners to remove valuables from the car.

View our crime prevention page for some tips on reducing vehicle crime.

Over the next three years Citysafe intends to address vehicle crime by:

  • Educating and actively encouraging the public to take crime prevention measures and promote sensible driving behaviours
  • Implementing prevention initiatives - educating young people before they offend
  • Targeting areas/car parks with high levels of vehicle crime.

Abandoned Vehicles

Abandoned vehicles can be expensive to remove, have an adverse effect on the environment and look unsightly, lowering the quality of life in neighbourhoods. They quickly become dangerous when vandalised or used as skips and filled with hazardous waste.

There is also a risk of explosion or injury from dangerous fluids, which leak and can catch fire or run into the water stream. Abandoned vehicles are often set on fire, endangering lives, property and the environment.

The Council has a duty to remove abandoned vehicles which have been left on the Public Highway. This includes the road itself, the adjacent footways and any adjacent Highway verges.

We also have a duty to remove abandoned vehicles from private land, once we have permission from the land owner.

You can help us to get these unsightly and potentially dangerous vehicles removed by reporting abandoned vehicles using the online form.
