Gender Equality Duty
The Gender Equality Duty is part of the larger Equality Act 2006. The Act establishes a new commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR) that will bring together all six equality strands.
The Gender Equality Duty requires public authorities such as Liverpool City Council to pay due regard to promoting gender equality and eliminating sex discrimination. This means that as both a service provider and an employer, the Council will have to demonstrate that it has developed/designed employment and service provision, paying due regard to the different needs od women and men.
Gender Equality Scheme
The Equality Act 2006 requires the Council to produce a Gender Equality Scheme by April 30th 2007 and we have written our first Scheme.
Liverpool City Council's Gender Equality Scheme
and Action Plan
sets out a framework and the actions we will take to understand and respond to the needs of women and men and boys and girls who face inequality and discrimination. In order to produce our Scheme we consulted with both the public and council staff. In February 2007, we held a public consultation event
where people took part in focus group discussions. We recieved some very constructive feedback from the consultation event, and also from the responses we received to the public questionnaire
during the period January to March 2007. We have incorporated this feedback into our final Scheme document, and would like to thank all those people who took part.
