Liverpool City Council's Statement of intent to the LGBT Community
Liverpool City Council
- Believes that the diversity of the local community enriches the city and contributes to its social and economic prosperity
- Is committed to the principle that all people have a right to equality of opportunity and equity in all service areas
- Knows the effects of homophobia, transphobia and negative stereotyping in society and the role this plays in reinforcing discrimination and harassment
- Understands that mis-information and ignorance with regards to gender identity issues and conditions, leads to prejudice, harassment and discrimination
Recognises LGBT people as African, African Caribbean, Asian, Chinese, Irish or other ethnic origin, as disabled people, as Christians, Sikhs, Muslims, Catholics and other faiths, young and older people and economically disadvantaged people, experience further discrimination because of their sexuality or gender identity.
Liverpool City Council is working to promote equality and diversity for all sections of the community. Listed below are the things we are hoping to do this year to improve services for the LGBT community.
1. Employment
We want to achieve three things:
- Update HR policies in line with legislation around sexuality and for good practice.
- Ensure Family Friendly Policies are explicitly inclusive
- Awareness raising and understanding of LGBT issues and needs throughout LCC.
2. Housing
We want to achieve the development of service responses that address inequalities for LGBT people.
3. Social services
We want to develop service responses that address inequalities for LGBT people and implement policies under the Civil Partnerships Act 2004.
4. Education and lifelong learning
We want to develop service responses that address inequalities for LGBT children and adults.
5. Partnership and transgender issues
We want to achieve three things:
- Continue to offer, develop and implement Civil Partnership Registration to Lesbian and Gay Couples
- Inform and advise on the Gender Recognition Act 2004.
- Consult with the Transgender community to gain a greater understanding of inequalities or discrimination faced when accessing services.
6. Culture, economic development, community development
We want to achieve three things:
- Access to gay and transgender publications.
- Consultation of LGBT community in first stage of regeneration projects to include this hard to reach group and to encourage economic advantage of pink pound.
- The Community Resources Unit will work to ensure the organisations it funds actively promote their services, activities and opportunities to the LGBT community.
