Data protection

The Data Protection Act 1998 was created to ensure that information about individuals is processed in accordance with the rights provided in the Data Protection Act 1998 together with providing them with safeguards to prohibit any non-compliant or unauthorised processing.

The Act itself provides individuals with the specific right of:

  • They have the right to know what information is being held about them,
  • They have the right to know what their information is being used for and why,
  • They have the right to know where the information came from and who has accessed it, 
  • They have the right to request access to their information,
  • They have the right to take action to block, rectify, erase or destroy inaccurate data.

The Data Protection Act 1998 gives individuals the right to find out what information is being held about them by Liverpool City Council. It determines how we collect and use this information, or process information.
