Liverpool City Council - adopted roads and highways

Adopted roads and highways

An adopted highway is a road, footpath or bridleway which we have a legal duty to maintain.

We hold records for every road and pathway in the city.  The records tell us whether the highway is adopted or not.  We use this information to respond to highway searches and answer queries from solicitors and developers.

New developments and housing estates often include new roads which will need to become part of the adopted network.  We check the design and construction of the new road at each stage to make sure that it is built to the correct standard.  This is important because once construction is complete a legal agreement is put in place which means that the Council must pay for any repairs to the road.  Maintenance costs will be higher on roads that have not been built correctly.
