Liverpool City Council - accident investigation

Traffic Calming

Which roads are chosen to be treated with traffic calming measures?

The City has been divided into 187 areas which are considered for treatment with traffic calming measures each year.  An assessment is then made of the number of accidents that have occured within each area.  Those areas with the highest accident rate for pedestrians and cyclists are then given priority for detailed investigation.  This ensures we are looking at all areas on an equal basis.

Can traffic calming be introduced on any road?

Once an area is given priority for investigation, we look to see what measures can be built.

Road humps are not right for every road.  For example, we need to consider the use of the road and the views of the emergency services.  We would look at other ways we can improve safety on these roads.

Other measures would include:

  • Pedestrian crossings facilities
  • Surface treatments
  • Lighting improvements
  • Improvements to signs and road markings
  • Junction improvements
