Cycle routes

Find your best route with the Liverpool Cycle Map.  Maps are available throughout Liverpool in all One Stop Shops, libraries, leisure centres, cycle shops and the 08 Place.  For your free cycle map, phone 0151 233 3000 or email transport.policy@liverpool.gov.uk.  Don't forget to include your postal address!


The city's cycle routes are outlined below.  Click on the bold headings to download the route map and find out what's on each route through the links provided.

Netherley Valley to Speke, Garston (PDF [950.6Kb] opens in new window)
Speke Hall and the Speke Coastal Reserve are all within easy access to the route.  For more informaton on the 24 hour cycle parking provided by Liverpool John Lennon Airport click here.  If you don't fancy cycling all the way into town, leave your bike at the secure cycle parking available at Liverpool South Parkway interchange.

Otterspool to the City Centre (PDF [300.3Kb] opens in new window)
This route connects to Route 56 (see below) and St. Michaels rail station.  The route provides a direct link into the City Centre.  Once you've passed Cains Brewery, continue along Jamaica Street passing the NOVAS Centre, directly to the city's shopping centre including Liverpool One (click here for information on cycle parking).  A Toucan crossing across the Strand provides cyclists with access to the Albert Dock.  An extra signed route runs along Mill Street.

University Route (PDF [861.7Kb] opens in new window)
Starting at Horrocks Avenue in Garston.  On the way into the City Centre, you'll find Sudley House Art Gallery and the beautiful Palm House as you cycle through Sefton Park.  Once passed the Liverpool Womens Hospital, it's a short trip along Myrtle Street and you'll be within easy reach of the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Community College.

Woolton Cycle Route (PDF [146.2Kb] opens in new window)
From Woolton to the City Centre the route takes you through pleasant parks and traffic calmed streets providing over 4 miles of cycle lanes.  It runs from Acrefield Road along Woolton Road, crossing National Cycle Route 56 at Taggart Avenue to Liverpool Hope University which also provides a link to the Liverpool Loop Line.

Carry on along Woolton Road, through Wavertree Playground.  You'll quickly be in the City Centre where you'll find the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

Connect2 Everton Park and the Mersey
Connect2 is the BIG Lottery funded walking and cycling project that is transforming local communities across the UK.  People in Connect2 communities will be able to take pride in places that are benefiting from better walking and cycling links as the project is rolled out by 2013.  Liverpool's Connect2 scheme aims to create a tree-lined, largely traffic free and direct, cycling and walking route, leading all the way from Everton Park through to the historic locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, then descending to Stanley Dock and the quayside itself.  Find out more about Connect2 here.

Liverpool Loop Line (PDF [1.1Mb] opens in new window) - Trans Pennine Trail (National Cycle Route 62)  (PDF [597.7Kb] opens in new window)
The Loop Line is part of the Trans Pennine Trail, a national coast-to-coast route from Southport to Hornsea.  Much of the largely traffic free route for walking and cycling is suitable for families and people with disabilities.

While there are people who walk or ride the whole 344km, most users are local and make shorter journeys.  Within Liverpool the Trail is known as the Loop Line, running from Halewood to Aintree, passing through several main areas of Liverpool.  Croxteth Hall and Country Park and Walton Hall Park are nearby.  You can also easily get to Broadgreen Hospital.

Chester to Liverpool Cycle Route (PDF [820Kb] opens in new window) (National Cycle Route 56)
From Chester to Liverpool, take your bike for free on the ferry across the Mersey from the Wirral to Liverpool's Pier Head and the Albert Dock.  You can cycle along the waterfront passing the Echo Arena until you reach the Britannia pub.  From Riverside Drive, it is a few minutes to Sefton Park.  The route continues to Childwall through Calderstones Park and to Liverpool Hope University.  Childwall Abbey Road links the route to Liverpool's Loop Line.

Liverpool City Centre to Walton (PDF [286.1Kb] opens in new window) (part of Regional Route 81)
Regional Route 81 will run along the Sefton coast to Southport, and further north to Preston.  The Liverpool stretch starts at New Islington and it won't be long until you are cycling through Everton Park, then across Stanley Park and up though Walton to Sefton.  The route provides easy access to Anfield and Goodison Football Stadiums, the Royal Hospital and the Liverpool Loop Line.



Further afield

Your bike also gives you the freedom to explore cycle routes around Merseyside.  Why not combine your cycle journey with the train?  Bikes go free on all Merseyrail trains but space is limited so please remember that trains can get busy at peak times.
