Liverpool City Council - why cycle

Why cycle?

For some people, cycling to work just isn't an option, but cycling to the newsagents or to return a rented video or library book could be!  45% of all car journeys are less than 2 miles which is the equivalent of a 10 minute bike ride, and two trips of 15 minutes by bike a day are enough to guarantee you a healthy heart.

So, why cycle?

For convenience

It can be faster to travel by bike than bus or car, especially for short journeys and in peak times.  Travel times are more predictable, so you don't have to set off early in case the traffic is bad.  Cycling provides door to door, personal transport and you can usually park your bike for free right outside your destination.

For health

Cycling will improve your strength, stamina and aerobic fitness with little risk of over exertion.  According to doctors, regular cyclists enjoy a fitness level equal to that of a person 10 years younger.  Physically active people have half the risk of coronary heart disease and up to a third the risk of a stroke compared to inactive people.

For more money in your pocket

Few car owners are really aware of what their car costs them and of the considerable savings to be made by cycling more often.  No need to pay for petrol, insurance or tax!
