Zebra Crossings
Zebra crossings do not have signals in place to tell motorists to stop. This means that pedestrians have to be more cautious when crossing.  While the lack of signals means that these crossings are much cheaper, it also means that they are only suitable in areas with low levels of traffic.

Pelican/Puffin Crossings
The Department for Transport have said that in future puffin crossings will replace pelican crossings. It is thought that they are safer and reduce delays. Unlike a pelican crossing where you are only given a certain amount of time to cross the road, puffin crossings have detectors that can tell when people are waiting to cross and when people are on the crossing itself. When you arrive at the crossing, you should stand by the push button box and press the button.  Vehicles will then be stopped until all pedestrians are safely over the road. These detectors also mean that vehicles are not stopped if the pedestrian changes their mind about crossing, or crosses quickly.

Toucan Crossings
Toucan crossings are signal controlled crossings that help pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road. Crossings are monitored by detectors which provide enough time for both pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely before allowing traffic to move.

Controlled Pedestrian Crossings
A controlled pedestrian crossing is one which has traffic lights with a red or green figure advising people when to cross the road. They also have dropped kerbs, red tactile paving and audible signals.
Where there is no red or green figure (for example within a traffic signaled junction), such crossings are called uncontrolled dropped crossings, and have just dropped kerbs with a buff tactile paving.

Pedestrian Refuges
A pedestrian refuge allows pedestrians to cross a road in two halves by giving them a safe point to wait, if needed, in the centre of the road.
