Walking and Accessibility
Pedestrian Strategy
Walking is an important method of transport both in its own right and when it is used to join up with other modes of transport such as buses, trains and cars.
A Merseyside Walking Strategy was written in June 2002 which set out Merseyside's plans for encouraging walking. The aim of the plan is to make safer and more pleasant surroundings for the people who use the pedestrian area.
The Merseyside Walking Strategy is reviewed every five years. Consultation took place in October 2007 to inform an updated strategy which is currently being revised.
Each authority has produced its own action plan as part of the strategy work. The Liverpool Action Plan includes strategies to make walking in Liverpool safer, more pleasant and easier for all.

Work is ongoing to improve the surroundings for pedestrians. One way this is being done is through the City Centre Movement Strategy. This includes making it easier for everyone in the city to get to public transport.
The City Council is also undertaking Pedestrian Audits of the City Centre and is improving the pedestrian environment in areas identified in the audits. These audits will be rolled out across the City.

Accessibility
Everyone should be able to travel to jobs, schools, health centres, shops and gyms by using buses and trains or by walking and cycling without the trip taking too long.
A Public Transport system that is easy to get on and that allows people to get to key destinations within a short travel time will be better for everyone. Liverpool City Council and Merseytravel are looking to make improvements for travel so that everyone can get to the places they need to get to.

Liverpool also has a Neighbourhood Travel Team who can help people who live in pathways areas to access and use Public Transport. They can do this by preparing a journey plan for a person. The plan sets out the steps that need to be taken to get from A to B as well as giving advice and information on travel.
