2011 Census
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a national Census every ten years to find out more about the people who live in England and Wales and about the make-up of local neighbourhoods.
The 2011 Census took place on 27th March, with questionnaires being sent out to around 25 million households.
The questionnaire asked about work, health, national identity, citizenship, ethnic background, education, second homes, language, religion, voluntary work, marital status and so on. These statistics will be used to build a picture of today's society.
Why does the census matter?
Like all local authorities in England and Wales, Liverpool City Council relies on Census population statistics to identify local needs for public services. Central government funding for these is directly related to how many and what kind of people the Census shows live in our area. So even if the Census were to end up just a few households short, it could make a very real difference to people's lives. The Census needs to include everyone, everywhere - and that is why everyone has to take part.
The Council has therefore been working closely with its local partners and colleagues from the Office for National Statistics to ensure as high a response rate as possible to the 2011 Census in Liverpool. Liverpool City Council has also been proactive in providing a wealth of further data on the city’s population for use by the Office for National Statistics as they quality assure the final Census results for the city.
When will 2011 census results be released?
Initial summary results from the 2011 census will be released in July 2012 but are likely to be only broad headline data.
It is anticipated that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will release the bulk of more detailed census data during Autumn 2012.
More specialist datasets, such as travel to work date will likely follow during 2013.
A more detailed census data release schedule, together with details of how census data can be accessed, will be released by the Office for National Statistics in Spring 2012. Liverpool City Council will provide further information regarding what data and census reports the council will be producing for Liverpool soon after we receive the full details of ONS's census data released next Spring.
