A carer is someone who gives regular care and support to someone else and is not paid for doing so. If you are an unpaid carer, you are entitled to a carer’s assessment which gives you a chance to think about what support you need.
You are entitled to a free assessment if you are aged 18 or above and care for someone who is a Liverpool resident. If you are under 18 please see our Young carer's page.
How do I get assessed?
You need to complete a self-assessment form.
Complete the self-assessment form online OR
Contact Careline (24 hours a day, seven days a week). They will send you a self-assessment form to complete and return.

What happens next?
We'll contact you and:
- Work with you on a support plan.
- Help you to stay healthy.
- Give advice on education or carers’ training.
- Take you through your rights if you are in paid employment.
- Make sure you’re getting the right financial support.
- Help you to have a break.
- Respect you and your caring role.
Will I have to pay for the services I receive?
There may be a cost for some of the services we provide. If this is the case we will work out how much you, or the person for whom you care, can afford to pay.
