Message from Joe

Dear resident,

I am proud to be the first ever directly elected Mayor of Liverpool.

My priorities are to build 12 new schools and 5,000 homes, create the conditions for 20,000 new jobs and make Liverpool cleaner and greener.

I am delighted that, in my first year as Mayor, good progress has already been made. You can find out more on these pages.

However, we are facing some incredibly tough choices due to the Government's austerity measures.

More than 80 pence in every pound of our funding is controlled by Whitehall, and over the lifetime of the Parliament we are losing 52 per cent.

This means that, on top of the £141 million we have been forced to cut over the last two years, we now need to find £149 million more over the next four.

In doing so, we’re going to face some extremely difficult decisions. I will do what I can to support the most vulnerable people in our city. But in doing so, we’re going to be forced to do things we don’t want to do.

My promise to you is that, in making these decisions, we will prioritise the most vulnerable people in our communities and do what we can to protect them. We will use the massively reduced resources to continue to help those most in need. And we will do so whilst keeping our city a vibrant, attractive place where people want to come and live and work.

I passionately believe that our challenges are dwarfed by the opportunities.  My vision of Liverpool is of a modern, ambitious city with a bright, bold future. A city which captures peoples imagination and stays in people’s hearts. I believe this vision is within our grasp. And I will do what I can, despite the difficult times we face, to continue moving Liverpool forwards.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me with your ideas or views by emailing me at
