Accessibility describes whether a website, mobile, tablet or other digital application can be used by people of all abilities and disabilities.

Making the web easier to use

Changing colours, font and text size

All modern browsers allow you to change colours and font sizes and we've tried to create a site which doesn’t get in the way when you change these settings. 

We also use 'Recite Me', text to speech software which also makes it easy to change colour schemes, font sizes and style. Find out more about this software below.

Text to speech, translations and dyslexia software

This website also uses a tool called 'Recite Me', a piece of software which helps people who:

  • can't see very well
  • are blind
  • can't hear very well
  • find a keyboard or mouse hard to use
  • find words difficult
  • speak a different language

You don't have to download or install anything - just click on the 'Read me aloud' link at the top of our website.

It includes text to speech functionality, dyslexia software and a translation tool with over 100 languages.  You can also use it to change colour schemes, font sizes and style.

Face to face at a One Stop Shop

A list of One Stop Shops is available on this site.

Each shop has:

  • Wheelchair/pram access and specially lowered desks
  • Mini-loop facilities
  • Advisors trained in British Sign Language (Levels1, 2 and 3)
  • BT's "language line" through which we can contact an interpreter for customers whose first language is not English.

Careline

Careline is is young people and adults with disabilities and mental health issues. It also offers help and advice to people who are affected by domestic violence and racial harassment.

Plain English

We try to write in plain English and avoid jargon. If you don’t understand something, please let us know.

Heading structures

The site uses simple heading structures which should make it easier to navigate, especially for people who use screen readers.

Web standards

We try our best to comply with code standards (e.g CSS and HTML) and W3C WAI guidelines.
